AntiSpam Upgrades for the Holidays

Less Spam - To: You, From: Us! For the past several weeks we have been trying to impact the amount of “spam” (junk email) received by our web hosting clients. Testing of a dozen control-group mail boxes that have been around for as little as just three years to a maximum of ten years, and openly published on the web multiple times, were susceptible to getting up to 500 spam emails per day! Obviously you didn’t get to enjoy that kind of volume, we made sure of it, but it was there, flowing like water. To make sure you don’t see that kind of volume in the future — and to further reduce what you do get now — we made some upgrades and we then tested and tweaked settings until the volume of those once-open control-group mailboxes were reduced from 500 emails to about ten. A significant reduction, all without blocking legitimate correspondents’ emails. Here are a few more details.

Advantages of Domain Name Ownership

In the early 90s our mother company, The Green Spot Ltd., started using email. Our first email address was through MCI, affording us an us@mcimail.com email address (or something like that). All was good. It didn’t look terribly professional, but back in that time we were ahead of the game compared to some of our industrymates. However, within the year MCI sold or changed names to worldcom.com. We had to update everything. Some time later we were told to change again, this time to some British-owned outfit. There was a buyout. Oh, man. Each time this happened it cost us a great deal of money — most everything was printed the old fashioned way back then, on paper, and that was inconvenient and expensive. Having been repeatedly burned by others we decided to take control and there was only one way to do so. It’s was time for our own domain name. It was time for our own email addresses.
